Throughout my life, singing & playing instruments have always been inspiring, connecting, and grounding activities for me. My love for music was always the light, and in the ninth grade, I decided that I was going to be a music teacher. The connection & guidance that music provides in my life greatly informs my teaching methods and philosophy today. I teach holistically, through mapping the body & bringing awareness to the sensations of singing. We will explore how our bodies experience sound and create a mindful technique where we improve the efficiency of your instrument, from the inside out. Singing is art and athletics fused — how our instrument feels is very important. The voice, like any other instrument, is just a mechanism, and once you understand the mechanism, you can use it to make whatever sounds you want!
Lessons are based in the physiology & science of the voice; we will create vocal “tools” for your individual toolbox, rather than a set of standardized exercises relevant to only a few genres. I always start from the bottom up - connecting to the body, the breath, and then the voice. This allows us to explore many vocal colors and shapes, coordinating our instruments for maximum control and artistry! I believe that music, particularly singing, is a powerfully healing but also vulnerable experience, and always keep that in mind during our lessons. I am gender affirming and trauma informed, and teach through the lenses of accessibility, inclusivity, and mindfulness. I aim to create a safe environment for all students to explore their instrument and their self-expression. Because of my own experience with neurodivergence and performance anxiety, our lessons together will be largely based in exploration/play, with the idea of the lesson as a collaborative experience, and there is never a “right” or “wrong” sound. Music is just a collection of sounds, anyway…
It is never too late to begin your musical journey - schedule a lesson today! I love getting to know students and helping them mold their technique for their personal goals, desires, and soul. Check out my Youtube for educational voice videos and performances!
MY BACKGROUND
Born and educated in Massachusetts, Kristen moved to Washington in the fall of 2015, after graduation and spending a summer living on a sailboat and exploring the coast of British Columbia. Falling in love with the area, she knew that she had to see more. Over the years, Kristen became an integral member of greater Seattle’s singing community, performing regularly with Tacoma Opera, Symphony Tacoma, and as a recitalist in the area. Presently, she is back in Massachusetts and excited to connect with her roots again.
